中世纪时代的西方社会，虽然处于黑暗和沉郁的土壤中，却也开出了诸多文化的绚烂花朵，对近现代的西方的文化发展提供了精神溯源。比如大学、哲学、骑士文学和哥特式建筑。

 

欧洲文化也被称为“海洋文化”，乐于冒险，尚武好战，称霸世界的野心；同时欧洲文化又是希腊文化、罗马文化和基督教文化的综合。

 

在近代西方文化中,既有希腊文化的那种对人性的尊重、对知识的追求，又有罗马文化的那种对功利的向往、对世俗国家的热爱，同时也有基督教文化的那种对现实生活的批判和对理想主义的向往。

 

欧洲文化的这种融合更新的模式，其结果导致了文化上的“杂交优势”。西方文化的科学精神具体表现为科学探索精神和批判否定的精神，西方文化的本源是“天人二分”的哲学概念，就是把人与对象世界区分开来，甚至对立起来，致力于征服和支配对象世界，以满足人的生存发展需要。
